Welcome!

Hi everyone!

My name is Rachel Wilson, and I will be your vice-chair for the House. I am currently a freshman at Harvard and will probably major in Government, so HMCE is an amazing opportunity for me. I am from the great state of Texas where I grew up on a ranch.

This past weekend, I just finished my first Model Congress conference, and I loved it. The experience has made me really excited for HMCE! I am looking forward to meeting you all and working with you. I hope you are getting excited! This discussion board is here for you to ask any questions you might have. Vasiliki, the Chair of House II, and I are more than happy to answer your questions!

Hi everyone,

My name is Vasiliki Katsarou and I will be your chair for the House!! I am really excited for this conference and I cannot wait to meet each and everyone of you and discuss really interesting domestic and international topics with you! I am a sophomore at Harvard, concentrating in Government and I am from Greece, so I am looking forward to returning to Europe!!
I participated in HMCE as a high school student, so I completely understand all your concerns and anxieties about preparation, procedures etc. (trust me, I still remember the stress of having to raise my placard and speak for the first time in front of everyone). So, please feel free to ask me any question you may have! As Rachel, my wonderful vice chair, said, we will be more than happy to answer them!
I hope you are all excited for the conference and again, I cannot wait to meet all of you!

Vasiliki Katsarou

hello!

my name is Aggeliki Papdimitriou and i represent Rosa Delauro in congress. I feel quite excited but anxious at the same time because it is the very first time i join a model congress!!
What's more I 'm quite shy and i cant express my views in public!! This is one reason i want to participate! To get over it! :) I really look forward to meeting you both and i strongly believe that you are going to do your best to help us!
Could you please let me know one thing?
Are we supposed to form a resolution or just a proposal?

Hi Aggeliki,

Welcome to HMCE and the House of Representatives! I completely understand your stress, especially since this is your first conference, but i want to tell you that you have nothing to worry about! This is a great experience, where you can practice public speaking and gain "courage"! I am really happy you decided to join model congress and Rachel, my vice chair and I will be more than happy to help you. Feel free to contact us and during the conference, to talk to us about any concerns you have. We want to make this experience as rewarding and enjoyable as possible!
What you will be doing during the conference is drafting legislation and writing bills for your topics. To give you an idea of what these look like, i would suggest you visit our website and see a description of the House committees but also, it would be very helpful if you went to the actual House of Representatives website to find information about the kinds of legislation it does and the bills it produces.
I hope this helps! I am looking forward to meeting you,

Vasiliki

Hello!

My name is Anthony and i am reprenting Eric Cantor in the conference. I have already participated to Muns but this is gonna be my first Model Congress. So , i think that there is a difference in the use of motions and points .To be more specific , as far as point of personal privilege is concerned , altough i ve readen the comitee guide , i am not sure if i know how to use it correctly .Could you please give a short explanation of the most common points and motions at Hmce ?
I am looking forward to the conference and glad to have a chair coming from my country :p anyway , see you all there thank you for your time!

Hi Anthony and Joanna,

I am so happy you have joined HMCE! I know that it can be a little scary to participate in a conference for the first time, but as i told Aggeliki, we are here to help you with any questions you have!
As far as points and motions are concerned, a description of parli pro is in your delegate guide. I will also spend some time at the beginning of the conference explaining the most important ones, so there is no confusion about their use. To answer your question about points of personal privilege, they are used mostly when a delegate has pressing issues of a more personal nature, meaning neither a question of substantive nature relating to the topic, nor a question about parliamentary procedure. If there is a problem or conflict, then you would use this point. Does this make sense? Again, I will explain all these motions and points in greater detail once we get to the conference. I know it can be a little confusing.
I am looking forward to meeting all of you!

Vasiliki
